The Bible in Nigerian Sign Language: A more relevant and impactful reach-out to Deaf
The Nigerian Sign Language is among the over 400 sign languages of the world without a full Bible. The full Bible has not only been translated into spoken languages alone, it has also been transmitted in audio format and even made available for the blind in Nigeria. But nothing has been done to take God’s Word to the deaf in their heart language – Sign Language. Consequently, the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) heard the cry of the Deaf for the Word of God in their heart language and has assumed the responsibility of translating the Bible into Sign Language.
The Nigerian Sign Language Bible Project commenced in partnership with Deaf Opportunity Out Reach (DOOR) International, Kenya and 110 Chronological Bible Stories were dedicated. The project was taken over by the BSN from DOOR International.
As part of the move to make God’s Word available to the deaf, the BSN has built a Deaf Translation Centre equipped with a state of the art studio for recording and it has engaged deaf Translators for the project.
The Nigerian Sign Language Bible Project, which is in its first year, is expected to run for five years at a minimum cost of twenty-five million Naira (₦25, 000,000) annually to make the translated Sign Language Bible available for the deaf free of charge.
You can speak God’s Word to the deaf by donating generously to this life-transforming project.
